Description

Your Expert Local Roaster. What if there was a skilled roaster who selected and prepared the best coffee for you at the touch of a button? What if this roaster gave you the personalized attention that you can only find in traditional neighborhood shops? Well, this roaster exists and you've just found it, it's called Hayman. Established in 2014. Experienced team trained by Specialty Coffee Asssociation. Artisan philosophy. Freshly Roasted Specialty Coffee. Hayman was born in 2014 with the mission of offering you a great selection of fresh specialty coffee and no-effort-spared attention to detail. We are grateful for having had the chance of serving thousands of customers, whom we consider friends. We are proud of knowing the names of our regular customers by heart. Our team works hard to bring you the best coffee and to surprise you with those details that matter. We aim to constantly improve, while also improving the world around us. 100% arabica coffee, known as specialty coffee. Single origin, never blended. Appreciate each coffee's individual character. Freshly roasted when we receive your order. Delight your senses with the most incredible coffees. A Whole New Coffee Concept Specialty Coffee To be graded specialty coffee, arabica beans need to score at least 80 points on a 100-point scale with objective quality standards. Most coffee doesn't make the cut and therefore is not part of our offering to you. Freshly Roasted Your coffee is roasted only when the order is received in our roastery for maximum freshness. Coffee starts losing aroma and flavor right after leaving the roaster, and this happens even faster if it is ground. In All Formats Coffee is delivered in the most convenient format to you. All coffee is available as whole bean, ground, coffee pods, and even as unroasted green beans for those who prefer to do the coffee roasting themselves. Ethical & Sustainable We work directly with coffee farmers and with importers who share our goal of empowering farmers with fair pay and long-term partnerships. We use only low-emission roasting equipment in our modern facilities. Brewing Tips Grinding If possible, use a burr grinder instead of a blade one. A quality burr grinder ensures an even grind and therefore a good extraction. Try to grind your coffee just prior to brewing and grind only the amount you need. Coffee preserves freshness for longer as whole bean than as ground. Weighting To use the right coffee-to-water ratio is key, so it pays off to invest in a good digital scale to measure by weight. Depending on the coffee brewing method, we suggest a coffee-to-water ratio between 1:13 and 1:17. The exception is the espresso, a .85–1.2fl oz (25–35ml) beverage prepared from .25-.32 oz (7–9g) of coffee. Water Quality Given that brewed coffee is about 98% water, it is easy to understand why water quality is crucial when it comes to coffee brewing. Whether you run tap water through a carbon filter or you opt for bottled water instead (aim for water with a pH level of 7), the important thing is to make sure your water tastes good. Storing We recommend storing your fresh roasted specialty coffee in the original Hayman coffee bag, which comes with a one-way degassing valve and a zipper seal to lock in freshness, or alternatively in an airtight container, and then placing either of them in a cool, dark place. This review is not about Hayman Coffee as purveyors... or roasters... or as a company... or as human beings. It's only about this particular bag of Kona grounds. Now, in all fairness, I knew this coffee was $20 per ounce when I plunked down $70 to buy 3.5 ounces. Math! For perspective: Three and a half ounces is about the weight of three empty standard envelopes or two dental floss pics. I mention this only to give you a sense of how little coffee we're talking about.Don't be fooled by the beautiful black bag or the beautiful blue box that contains the beautiful black bag. The bag is mostly empty. Obviously, part of what I paid for was the glamorous bag and box.Let's ground ourselves in the numbers. According to the Specialty Coffee Association, we need 0.36 ounces of coffee per 6-ounce cup. I'll spare you the algebra: This bag should make about 10 small cups of coffee. That's $7.00 per cup.The most expensive city for a cup of coffee is Seattle, WA. It's $3.92 per cup there. The least expensive is Davenport, IA. It's just $1.39 there. The average price for a cup of coffee in the US is $2.70. In Washington, DC it's $2.00.So, if you work in the White House, you're spending 350% more on this coffee than the local average. We might expect that from a government that pays $10,000 for a hammer. It's a zero sum game, right? If you spend the $70 for these 10 "above average" cups of coffee, then you can't spend the same $70 on 35 "average" cups. Or you can't spend $20 on 10 average cups and then buy crypto (and become a crypto-millionaire) with the $50 you just saved. So the question is whether it's worth it. Do I think this Kina coffee is worth $7 per cup?In short: No. Of course not. That question is preposterous. No. It's definitely not worth it. Are you kidding me? I mean, don't get me wrong, it's good coffee. No complaints about the flavor. But it's absolutely, positively, definitely not sooooo much better than other store-bought coffees that it warrants this $10,000 hammer price.Super-friendly people there, though. Absolutely excellent customer service. That's definitely what you're paying for.
