After 21 months (and some probably ill-advised reheating of coffee on the gas stove burner), our Chemex carafe cracked at the bottom and leaked, so we had to replace it. Because of external wood/leather handle, the "neck" of that carafe is too small to get a hand in to scrub out the old coffee, so it looked pretty nasty by the end and I didn't want another one. Before I bought this carafe, I purchased another one that sounded great and claimed to hold "8 cups" like the Chemex did. It was only the fine print that revealed that a "cup" = 4oz. Apparently coffee is measured by the karat? At any rate, I sent it back and renewed my search for a CLEANABLE carafe as large as the Chemex. This one fits the bill! With a glass handle, the neck is large enough that I can get my hand into the carafe with a sponge and give it a good wash. The steel filter lets the coffee oils through, so the coffee tastes better. While it is borosilicate glass, we don't risk it on the stove, so unless we drop it on the tile floor, I expect that it will last a long time. This really is a great large-capacity pour over coffee carafe!
